YOSHII SCHOOL(吉井派) was a Japanese sword school founded by Tamenori(為則) near the Yoshii river in Bizen province.
- Nanbokucho to Muromachi period
Famous Swordsmiths from the school
Shape : Slender and small blade.
Hada : Finely-grained MOKUME-HADA(杢目肌), UTSURI(映り).
Hamon : NIOI-DEKI(匂出来), small GUNOME(互の目), which has NIE(沸) apparent at the bottom of the curves of the Hamon.
Boshi : MIDARE-KOMI(乱れ込み), short KAERI(返り).
- The origin of the school is still uncertain, one theory says the founder was from the UKAI SCHOOL(宇甘派), the other says Kanenori founded the school and he was a descendant of the OSAFUNE SCHOOL(長船派).
- Some of the smiths of the school moved to Izumo province later on and founded the Michinaga school(道永派) there.
- During the Nanbokucho period, when the school was founded, almost all the sword schools made a robust-looking sword with a wide and thick blade and a large KISSAKI(切先) in order to use a sword from the horseback. But the Yoshii school’s swords made in this period are not like that, they are smaller and slenderer and the reason behind it remains uncertain.
