UKAI SCHOOL(宇甘派 or 鵜飼派) was a Japanese sword school founded by Unsho(雲生) in Ukai of Bizen province. Since the school’s smiths had TORIJI(通字) of KUMO/UN (雲) in common, they were as known as Unrui(雲類) or simply Kumo(雲) also.

Shape : NAKA-SORI(中反り), KATANA(刀) is common while TANTO (短刀) is very unusual.
Hada : Fine grained blackish ITAME-HADA(板目肌).
HamonNIOI-DEKI(匂出来), Tight NIOIKUCHI(匂口), Basically SUGUHA(直刃) but containing small CHOJI(丁子) or small GUNOME(互の目).


  • Unlike other Bizen schools, Ukai school’s swords display some characteristics of RAI SCHOOL(来派) and AOE SCHOOL(青江派).This is because the school founder moved from Yamashiro to Bizen province.
