What is Tsuba(鍔)?

  • Tsuba is a Japanese sword guard, typically elaborately decorated and made of iron, copper, brass, or alloy.
  • The more decorative side of the Tsuba should be the front, which faces the hilt of the sword, unless both sides are the same.
  • Many Tsuba has two holes on each side of the central hole, where the tsuba fits onto the hilt of a sword. These holes are for the small knife called Kogatana (小刀) and the spatula-looking tool called Kogai (笄) which is used as a comb by Samurai. The right hole is for Kogai, the left hole is for Kogatana.
