What influenced the change in the shape of the sword made at the end of the Edo period? (1853-1867)

The end of the Edo period was unquiet and there’re many conflicts throughout the country over the opening of Japan, so that the shape of the sword of the time is practical like the swords made in the wartime, where the Samurai battled in a large group. But unlike those swords, the end of the Edo period swords were designed to fight in a small group in the street.
