ryumon school japanese sword

RYUMON SCHOOL(龍門派) was a Japanese sword school founded by Nobuyoshi(延吉) in Yoshino of  Yamato province.

  •  Kamakura period.

Famous Swordsmiths from the school

  • Nagayoshi(長吉)
  • Nobuyoshi(延吉)
  • Yoshiyuki(吉行)

Shape : High SHINOGI-SUJI(鎬筋).
Hada : ITAME-HADA(板目肌) blended with MASAME-HADA(柾目肌).
Hamon : SUGUHA(直刃) resembling a frayed thread or Bizen style wavy Hamon.

  • Nobuyoshi, the founder of Ryumon school, had his roots in the SENJUIN SCHOOL(千手院派). So the school is often categorized as a branch of the Senjuin school. However, until 1975, the school was considered to be a branch of the TAIMA SCHOOL(当麻派) instead. The reason for this attribution change is because of the wavy Hamon of Nobuyoshi’s swords, which resembles that of Senjuin swords more than that of Taima swords.
  • The quality of Ryumon school swords is well-established, and a lot of their swords have been designated as Juyo token level by the NBTHK.
