RYOKAI (了戒) was the Japanese swordsmith from RAI SCHOOL(来派) in Yamashiro province.
- Rai Kunitoshi(来国俊) *father of the smith.
- Ryo Hisanobu(了久信) *son of the smith.
Shape : IORI-MUNE(庵棟), KOSHI-SORI(腰反り).
Hada : ITAME-HADA(板目肌) mixed with MASAME-HADA(柾目肌).
Hamon : NIE-DEKI(沸出来), SUGUHA(直刃) which resembles frayed thread, Tight NIOIKUCHI(匂口).
Boshi : KO-MARU(小丸).
- The smith’s name Ryokai comes from his buddhist name.
- Ryokai’s swords were well known for its sharpness so much, his swords are on great demand among Samurai and swordsmen. The legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi(宮本武蔵) was also a big fan of his works and cherished his sword for life.
