NANKI SHIGEKUNI(南紀重国) was a Japanese swordsmith in Kii province. His name was succeeded through 11 generations until the end of the Edo period.
Nanki Shigekuni swords can be categorized into 2 types, one is influenced by the YAMATO Tradition(大和伝), and the other is influenced by the SOSHU Tradition(相州伝).
Yamato tradition style
Hada : MOKUME-HADA(杢目肌).
Hamon : NIE-DEKI(沸出来).SUGUHA(直刃) with NIJUBA(二重刃).
Boshi : HAKIKAKE(掃掛け).
Soshu tradition style
Hamon : Rough NIE-DEKI(沸出来). Big GUNOME(互の目) or NOTARE(のたれ). SUNAGASHI(砂流し).
- Nanki Shigekuni, whose real name was Kuro Saburo(九郎三郎), is said to have been a descendant of Kanenaga(包永) of the TEGAI SCHOOL(手掻派).
- The smith left Yamato tradition style swords a lot more than Soshu tradition style ones.
- He was one of the greatest swordsmiths of the SHINTO(新刀) period.
