Characteristics 


Nanki Shigekuni swords can be categorized into 2 types, one is influenced by the YAMATO Tradition(大和伝), and the other is influenced by the SOSHU Tradition(相州伝).

Yamato tradition style
Shape :
Hada : MOKUME-HADA(杢目肌).
HamonNIE-DEKI(沸出来).SUGUHA(直刃) with NIJUBA(二重刃).
BoshiHAKIKAKE(掃掛け).

Soshu tradition style

Hamon : Rough NIE-DEKI(沸出来). Big GUNOME(互の目) or NOTARE(のたれ)SUNAGASHI(砂流し).

Notes

  • Nanki Shigekuni, whose real name was Kuro Saburo(九郎三郎), is said to have been a descendant of Kanenaga(包永) of the TEGAI SCHOOL(手掻派).
  • The smith left Yamato tradition style swords a lot more than Soshu tradition style ones.
  • He was one of the greatest swordsmiths of the SHINTO(新刀) period.
