What is Nakago()?

nakago japanese sword

  • Nakago refers to the tang of a Japanese sword.
  • In 701, the Japanese government ordered sword smiths to inscribe their signature into the tang of swords they made. However, some sword smith or schools didn’t follow the rule, so that their swords has no signature inscribed from the beginning.
  • The Nakago, which remains as it is, is called UBU-NAKAGO(生ぶ茎). As almost all the old swords have shortened due to ownership change, Ubu-Nakago is considered very precious.
