What is Mekugi-Ana(目釘穴)?
- Mekugi-Ana refers a hole in the NAKAGO(茎). A peg called MEKUGI(目釘) is inserted through this hole, so that the tang is fixed to the sword hilt tightly.
- A new hole is made, either when the sword is shortened or is mounted in a new made KOSHIRAE(拵え). If the top and the bottom hole are very close, the new hole must be made for Koshirae remounting. If not, the sword must have undergone SURIAGE(磨上) or MACHIOKURI区送り) and the top one must be the new.
