KANEMOTO(兼元) was a swordsmith active in Mino province. His name has been succeeded through many generations until today.
- Late Muromachi period
Hada : Largely-grained ITAME-HADA(板目肌) on HIRA-JI(平地). MASAME-HADA(柾目肌) on SHINOGI-JI(鎬地).
Hamon : NIOI-DEKI(匂出来). SANBON-SUGI(三本杉)*the later generations’ one is more pointed.
Boshi : JIZO(地蔵)*but the later generations’ one is KO-MARU(小丸).
- The name of Kanemoto has been succeeded through many generations until today. Among them, the 2nd generation is the most popular, he is often referred to as Magoroku Kanemoto(孫六兼元) to distinguish him from other generations. And he and the 1st generation were rated to the SAIJO-O-WAZAMONO ranking(最上大業物).
- Kanemoto’s sword were so famous for its highly cutting ability that many notable lords possessed it, namely Takeda Shingen(武田信玄), Toyotomi Hideyoshi(豊臣秀吉), and Maeda Toshiie(前田利家). Also, a Japanese author, Mishima Yukio(三島由紀夫) suicided with the smith’s sword.
