KAIFU SCHOOL(海部派) was a Japanese sword school founded by Ujiyoshi(氏吉) in Awa province(阿波).

Characteristics 


ShapeKATAKIRIHA-ZUKURI(片切刃造). TANTO (短刀) or WAKIZASHI (脇差) are common.
Hada : Fine-grained ITAME-HADA(板目肌).
Hamon : NIE-DEKI(沸出来).SUGUHA(直刃).
BoshiICHIMAI BOSHI(一枚帽子).

Others :  Signature carved into the HIRA-JI(平地).

Notes


  • The founder of the Kaifu school started sword making to defend against the neighboring provinces.
  • Most of the extant Kaifu swords are Tanto because their swords were so popular for its cutting-ability that the Tokugawa family ordered a lot of Tanto from the school.
  • Since Kaifu swords are kind of reminiscent of Go Yoshihiro(郷義弘)’s swords, a few of the unsigned Go Yoshihiro swords are believed to have been altered from the school swords.
